What are you feeding your loved ones?
MSG, artificial sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup, and color dyes are all well known food additives, but do you know what these additives do to you? In this blog I am going to touch on what these additives can do to you and your loved ones.
MSG (monosodium glutamate) also known on food labels as hydrolyzed vegetable protein and natural flavoring/spices, is a taste enhancer found in most foods. Studies have been done that has proven that MSG kills neurons (nerve cells). MSG had to be removed from baby food because after a study on mice it was found the MSG was actually cause infants to go blind. It also has been proven to cause early onset puberty in kids by destroying the hypothalamic neurons. MSG also can cause degenerative brain diseases such as Huntington’s , Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, ALS, and it also can cause migraines, brain damage, seizures, ADD, ADHD, and more (Blaylock).
Artificial sweeteners are not a sweet as you thought. Next time you are shopping think twice before you reach for the sugar free or diet version! Aspartame is one of the most used/dangerous artificial sweetener. It was discovered in 1965 and was disapproved by the FDA until 1983. It was disapproved due to flawed data, finding brain tumors in animal study, and lack of study in long term effects. It was approved even though further studies were not done appropriately and many disagreed with approval (Mercola). The primary components are phenylalanine and aspartic acid. When combined the body does not recognize how to properly break it down. The body starts to break down the aspartame, creating multiple chemicals, 10% of the aspartame turns into methanol (a wood alcohol) which, if the product is left in a warm area or had a long shelf life, can turn into formaldehyde (used in paint remover and embalming fluid) (Mercola). Formaldehyde has been proven to cause cancer. Possible immediate side effects of artificial sweeteners is change in mood, vision, or heart rate, other effects are headaches, nausea/vomiting, fatigue, and more. Some potential long term side effects are seizures, depression, blindness, kidney damage, cancer, organ failure, and more.
High Fructose Corn Syrup is NOT SUGAR, it’s worse. Top industries try to convince people that High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) is just as good or bad as sugar. It is true that both are harmful in large amounts, and the amount of sugar and HFCS ingested by the average person in a single year is 140 pounds, 10,000 years ago it was 20 teaspoons a year (Hyman). What makes HFCS worse is that they are drastically chemically different. HFCS is NOT natural, yes it does come from corn, but the chemical additives and the chemical build is not natural. Its 55-45 fructose to glucose and they have no chemical bond. When HFCS is ingested it is absorbed by the blood stream, the fructose goes to the liver and is one of the lead causes of fatty liver, the glucose joins your insulin (fat storing hormone). The Insulin, when mixed with glucose, can cause metabolic disturbances causing increase in weight, appetite, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, dementia, and more. Also after testing for chemicals in HFCS not only were there unknown chemicals but also high levels of mercury (Hyman). Large amounts of HFCS can even cause tares in your intestinal lining.
Artificial food coloring are colors to die for. There are alternatives to artificial dyes such as natural dyes, using beet extract or other natural resources but they aren’t nearly as common as the artificial prototype. The U.S. uses 15 million pound of food coloring per year, which is 5 times the amount used in 1955 (Colors). There are several different types of food dye such as blue #1 and #2, Yellow #5 and #6, and others. These dyes can be found in our mac n cheese, our favorite sweets, baked food, and other everyday products. Did you know that these dyes are made from petroleum? Yes, some of the food you ingest may have petroleum in it, the same petroleum your car runs off of (Why). This is why any products in the UK with color dye comes with a warning label. Food dye gives no nutritional value to food, it is just there for the WOW factor. It does however have negative impacts to your food, here are some examples: Blue #1 can cause chromosomal damage and is banned in France and Finland, Green #3 can cause bladder tumors and is banned in Europe, Red #40 (the most commonly used dye) can cause chromosomal damage, hyperactivity, and lymphomas, and there are many more examples each one with negative side effects such as these (Colors).
So next time you sit down to a big bowl of mac n cheese with a cup of sweet tea and ice cream waiting for you when dessert time comes, check the label. What is it exactly that you and your loved ones are eating? Make sure you know the facts of what is going into your bodies, because what you put into it is what you’ll get out of it.
