Is it in your Head? Or your Spine?

People come to Precision Chiropractic for many reasons. Recently most of our new patients have had the same chief complaint; experiencing headaches or migraines. You may ask why someone would go to a Chiropractor for this particular secondary condition (symptom)? To answer that question, I want to briefly touch on some case studies and their conclusions. One study was done on a 13 year old female child who had complaints of neck pain and continuous headaches. After visiting her family Doctor she was told to visit a Chiropractor. After just 4 Chiropractic adjustment over a 2 week period she was pain free (Hewitt). The second study I would like to mention is one done on 85 patients who receive

Concussions

Concussions

With football season starting back up and kids are getting back into school sports, there is an important topic that doesn’t get mentioned enough. Concussions.

Here is one definition on concussions as stated by Centers for Disease control and Prevention:
“Concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury—or TBI—caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, stretching and damaging the brain cells and creating chemical changes in the brain” (HEADS UP).

Did you know that a person doesn’t even need to

How High is Your Sleep Debt?

How High is Your Sleep Debt?
Who doesn’t like sleep? I know if I could, I would spend all morning catching those Z’s, but who has time for that? Most people do not get the recommended amount of sleep. For infants the recommended amount of sleep is 16 hours a day, for teens it is 9 hours, and for the adults we need 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night (Brain Basics). When a person doesn’t sleep for the time their body needs they actual accumulate a Sleep Debt. This is when the more hours you miss of sleep the more exhausted you feel until the debt is paid.
Each time a person sleeps their body goes through a cycle of 5 stages of sleep, stages 1, 2, 3, 4, and REM (Rapid Eye movement) stage. Ea

Birth Trauma and Chiropractic

Birth Trauma and Chiropractic:
We all know that giving birth is one of the most painful experiences a woman can go through, but it is also traumatizing for the newborn. An average, hospital performed birth, in the United States consists of a doctor putting approximately 100+ pounds of tension on the child’s neck and shoulders all while twisting the baby head and neck up to 135 degrees (A, Towbin).
The U.S. birthing system is lacking in the evaluation and checking of the newborn’s spine and skull for abnormalities. Abraham Towbin M.D. did a study at Harvard Medical School’s department of Neuropathology, he states, “Survival of the newborn is governed mainly by the integrity and func

Functional Pelvic Distortion: Leg Length Inequality – A Brief Review

Functional Pelvic Distortion (FPD) is when there is a pelvic imbalance and the resultant is a functional leg length inequality. Meaning your pelvis may be shifted slightly to the left or right causing one of the legs appear to have longer length. Approximately 10% of the population suffers from an asymmetry of 1 cm or more. But why should this matter to you? Leg Length inequality is one of the leading causes for back pain and pain in the lower extremities (Mennell). If the pelvic bone is distorted by as little as 4mm symptoms may emerge (Reid and Smith).

While walking or sitting you are supporting only 1X your body weight with your limbs; while running you are actually supporting 3x your

Chiropractic and Athletes

Chiropractic Care and Athletes:
Many athletes use chiropractic care to ensure that they are functioning at 100% and can put their best foot forward. Your spine is like armor for your nervous system and your nervous system is how communication from the body to the brain, and vise versa, can happen. When your spinal structure shifts, a nerve can become compromised, preventing the proper communication to occur. Your body can heal and guard itself at its best when there is nothing blocking that communication.
Chiropractic is not only for adult athletes, it is for everyone! Children that are between the ages of 11-15 account for 55% of hospitalization due to sport injuries. During each workout

What is Anterior Head Syndrome?

Anterior Head Syndrome (AHS) is when one or multiple Structural Shifts occur in your neck, which causes your head to lose its natural curve and shift forward. AHS, in its earlier stages, looks like a forward slouch, and can develop into a hump. But it is not the look of AHS that matters. What happens when your structure is compromised does. Structurally speaking it can cause disc degeneration and herniation, pinched nerves, spinal decay, bone spurs, etc. When this takes place it can lead to TMJ, carpal tunnel syndrome, migraines, digestive conditions, and much more.
The average adult head weighs 10-12 pounds. With every

Stress

Stress. Everybody’s got it. Whether it is from too much homework, work, or just life, everyone has felt it. It weighs down your mind and envelopes you until that little problem, task, idea, takes over the rest of your day. But does stress just affect your moods and thoughts? Studies have shown that stress is not only exhausting mentally but physically as well.
Stress is known as one of the main causes for depression, anxiety disorders, rise in blood pressure, obesity… and the list goes on. But the question is, what can we do to help manage the stress in our everyday lives because let’s face it, things are not going to always go our way.
Of course there is not one solution or cure all
